Years 1 and 2 Phonics and Spelling Parents Workshop

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Year 1 and 2 Phonics and Spelling Workshop. The workshop shared the raised expectations for Reading and Writing in Key Stage 1 and focused on how phonics is taught at Stourfield Infant School and also the National Curriculum requirement of the accurate spelling of High Frequency and Common Exception words. Parents were shown a typical Super Sounds Lesson and were shown websites to help their children with reading words and non-words in preparation for the Year 1 Phonics Screening in May (www.phonicsplay.co.uk and www.oxfordowl.co.uk). Parents were also given ideas for learning spellings at home.

The feedback was very positive including the following quotes:

‘Very useful. Good to know more about the expectations and how the school are helping with extra support’.

‘It was very useful to know what websites to use to assist and where to look for the expectations’.

‘Very informative session and useful to know the objectives children are working towards in each year group’.

‘Excellent practical ideas to help’.

‘Helpful information about how to do spellings’.
