Humanities

We teach the subjects of History and Geography through topics.  These lessons also teach children the skills linked to each subject e.g. in a historical topic the children are taught the chronological skills needed to understand time-lines.

History and Geography give our children the opportunity to learn about significant historical events in their own locality.  They learn to use a range of resources to develop the skills of observation, chronology, empathy and interpretation.

During historical and geographical topics, the children develop skills of analysis and reflection about the links between people, their actions and places in both the past as well as present.  Children develop questioning skills and, as their knowledge increases, they express opinions about historical events and the lives of famous people.  They evaluate their local environment, as well as contrasting areas of the United Kingdom and the wider world.  Children are taught the names and locations of the world's seven continents and five oceans.

The children explore and learn through two topics a term and the work is planned to link together, to make the learning relevant and meaningful.  The children take part in out of school visits to places of interest linked to their topic e.g. Year 1 learning about animals visit Honeybrook Farm.

We also book visitors to come into school to share their expertise and give the children a fun, real and memorable learning experience e.g. when Year 1 are studying Pirates, they enjoy a visit from the author of the Captain O pirate book series and also enjoy a Gooey Science day, linked to their topic about Materials.  By the end of their topic, we plan a “Fantastic Finish” session where the children show what they have learnt.
