Year One and Year Two Reading Workshop
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Year One and Year Two Reading Workshop.
The workshop concentrated on how to help children with their reading comprehension skills. The session started with the parents reading a short passage about ‘Quarks’ and ‘Gluons’ and although they were able readers, they were unable to understand what the text was about. This highlighted the need for adults to ask children probing questions as part of their daily reading, along with discussing new words to improve their understanding and increase their vocabulary. As part of this session, ideas were shared about supporting children through using picture clues, as well as questioning and strategies for segmenting and blending for reading.
The feedback was very positive including the following quotes:-
“Great tips for how to help your child at home.”
“A really informative session and great to have some guidance on how to progress.”
“It was useful to be reminded about taking time to read and finding the right time to read with my child, possibly in the morning.”
“It was really useful to hear about comprehension and about how to make the book come alive.”
“It was useful to hear about the different types of questions to ask to encourage better comprehension.”
“I will remember to discuss the book more with my child.”
